The Jewel of Africa (La joia de África)

"The Jewel of Africa" is a story about two great passions - the passion for Africa and the passion between Joana and Romão.

The original from Portuguese television, take place at the end of the 50´s and has a magnificent cast, being one of the largest productions ever made in Portugal.

The story begins with great drama, when Romão is told that his mother is at the brink of death. Before dying, she tells him that he isn´t her biological son and place a beautiful necklace on his neck. It´s in the, then, city of Lourenço Marques (today Maputo) that his great friend Domingos, a black man, tells him that accompanied by Domingos, in search of his real parents.

Beautiful Joana returns to the spectacular region where the plot is centred. She returns from Lisbon to marry Miguel, the son of an aristocrat. But Joana and Miguel have totally different views regarding the relationship with the natives: Joana has always mingled with the locals, without prejudice, having Domingos as her best friend.

Joana is about to be attacked by a lion when Romão comes to the rescue, shooting down the lion. Between them, a steamy love is born, in the midst of the torrid African landscape, which will face the fierce opposition of Miguel and his mother.

What will become of Joana´s fate... and Romão´s? What is the necklace mysterious secret? "The Jewel of Africa" is a unique soap opera, due to its stories, landscapes and realism that forever marked television in Portugal.
